Northwestern San Miguel County in northeastern New Mexico... * Until 1000 AM MDT. * At 755 AM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms temporarily ending over the Hermits Peak - Calf Canyon Burn Scar. Between 0.5 and 5.5 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring in Manuelitas Creek, and probably many other drainages. Debris flow is expected and will likely consist of rock, mud, vegetation and other loose materials. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding in and around the Hermits Peak - Calf Canyon Burn Scar. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of areas in and around the Hermits Peak - Calf Canyon Burn Scar. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Las Vegas, Montezuma, Storrie Lake State Park, Sapello, El Porvenir, Tierra Monte, Romeroville, Watrous, Gallinas and Manuelitas. This includes Interstate 25 between Mile Markers 340 and 366. This includes the following recreation areas... E.V. Long Campground, El Porvenir Campground, Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge, McAllister Lake Wildlife Area and Storrie Lake State Park. The potential exists for additional rainfall over the burn scar today and moreso tonight. This is a life threatening situation. Heavy rainfall will cause extensive and severe flash flooding of creeks, streams and ditches in the Hermits Peak - Calf Canyon Burn Scar. Severe debris flows can also be anticipated across roads. Roads and driveways may be washed away in places. If you encounter flood waters, climb to safety. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
